Our story so far

We learned how lonely safeguarding can feel

Branches of Safety comes from a real family experience. We are sharing the lessons honestly, while protecting the identity and privacy of everyone involved.

How it began

We never expected this to become our world.

Our family became involved with children’s services and, later, family-court proceedings. Like many families, we went into the process believing that love, good intentions and a willingness to help would speak for themselves. We learned quite quickly that safeguarding asks different questions.

It is not only about whether somebody loves a child. It is about whether adults can recognise risk, understand the impact of their decisions, put firm boundaries in place and show that change can be relied upon over time.

That was difficult to hear at points, but it mattered. There are decisions we would make differently now and things we needed to understand more clearly.

01

Inside the process

The language was often another barrier.

We found ourselves trying to understand assessments, plans, meetings, legal documents and professional language while also coping with the fear of what might happen to our family. Acronyms were used as if everybody automatically knew what they meant. Sometimes different people appeared to explain the same issue in different ways.

When the consequences are enormous, not understanding the wording can make it harder to ask the right question, challenge a factual mistake or show what has genuinely changed. A family can look defensive when they are actually frightened, overwhelmed or still trying to work out what they are being asked.

02

Accountability without erasure

Taking responsibility did not mean losing our voice.

We had to look honestly at past decisions and why professionals were worried. That did not mean every conclusion felt fair, every assessment reflected the whole picture or every part of the process was easy to accept.

Both things can be true. Families can need to make real changes, and services can still need to listen properly, explain decisions clearly and recognise relevant progress. Accountability should not be used as a demand for silent agreement. It should lead to safer thinking, safer behaviour and better decisions.

03

The gap we kept finding

We needed someone calm in the middle.

There are excellent specialist services for legal advice, domestic abuse, mental health and other individual needs. What we struggled to find was somewhere that could calmly explain the safeguarding process, help a family prepare useful questions and encourage honest reflection without either attacking professionals or dismissing the family.

Too often, families seem to be offered two unhelpful extremes: agree with everything without question, or treat the whole system as the enemy. Neither helps a child. We believe there is room for support that is compassionate, independent-minded and firmly grounded in safety.

04

What grew from it

Branches of Safety is the support we wished existed.

We are starting with plain-English information, practical tools and careful signposting for parents, grandparents, kinship carers and wider family members. Over time, and only when the right training, policies and safeguards are in place, we hope to develop moderated peer spaces and workshops.

This will not be a service that promises particular outcomes, provides legal advice or helps people avoid safeguarding plans. Children’s safety has to remain central. But families should not have to choose between being treated with humanity and being held accountable. There should be room for both.

Why some details are private

This is a real family, not a case study.

We will not publish names, identifying details, private documents or information that belongs to a child or another family member. Our purpose in sharing this story is to explain why Branches of Safety matters—not to argue an individual case in public.

As the organisation develops, any lived-experience contributions from other people will be treated with the same care.
